One Wave Surf School Policies & Liability Waiver

The following is a list of One Wave Surf School Policies and our Liability Waiver. Please read through. By signing up for a lesson you are also signing off that you have, “Read and agree to the One Wave Surf School Policies & Liability Waiver.”

1. Agreement to One Wave Surf School Policies & Liability Waiver
Payment of the lesson means you have read and accepted and agree to the One Wave Surf School Policies below, including the recreational waiver. Note that during your surf lesson, you are surfing at your own risk and by your own choice. Please read the waiver and be noted that by agreeing to take the lesson lesson and or paying for the lesson, you are agreeing and signing off to its terms. All Adults must sign off, electronically or by had, on the liability waiver. All minors must have parent or guardian sign off for them. This agreement also applies to all subsequent lessons you take with One Wave Surf.

2. Arrive Early
Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early to ensure you arrive on time, traffic and parking are unpredictable in Los Angeles, to say the least. Please be 100% ready to go by the time of the scheduled the lesson. Please be at the lesson meeting point at this time. If you are late, we may not be able to extend the lesson time as we may have other lessons scheduled or obligations that day. However, if your lessons run a little late because everyone is having a blast, relax and enjoy because that is what the Aloha spirit is all about.

3. What to Bring / What your lesson includes
Bring a towel and apply waterproof sunscreen 15 minutes before your lesson. You will need to wear a swimsuit under your wetsuit we provide. Most days in the summer you do not need a wetsuit if you already have swim trunks or Bikini and a rash guard or T-shirt. Surfboard is provided unless otherwise discussed. Make sure you have a safe place to stash your valuables or leave them at home. Your instructor may be able to lock your stuff in the van, but that not ideal.

4. Payment
Once we have confirmation of payment your lesson and the liability waiver, your lesson is booked. We will send you a lesson confirmation email that will include your instructors phone number and final details on meeting.
Any small credit card or service fees are never refundable as we don’t control those.

5. Responsibility for rental equipment
Please be careful with our equipment during your rental or lesson. Fins can break off from the surfboard if you ride into the sand. Breaking the fin off from the board also causes a dangerous situation to the rider. Once that fin jams into the sand, the ride comes to a screeching halt and sometimes jolts the rider forward onto the sand. Thus, we encourage our students to please step off the board once they are in about a foot of water. Please pay attention to your instructor on where the safe areas are to exit your ride. If a fin is broken during a rental or lesson and the instructor states that the student was at fault. The student is obligated to pay for half of the fin. The fins for the boards we use are $80.00, not a good situation for the students, nor us. So, for your safety & for our equipment longevity, please do not ride the fins into the sand. Nobody wants to be picking sand out of their teeth.

6. The One Wave Surf lesson cancellation policy
A full refund or reschedule with at least 72 hours notice. Half refund with cancellation notice of 71- 48hours or a free reschedule. However, with less than 48 hours notice, we cannot offer any refund or reschedule. A lesson is considered a “No Show” if the instructor does not see you at the designated meeting point for 30 minutes after your lesson booking time. There will be no make up time, refunds or reschedules for a “No Show.”

Our instructors are professionally trained and go to extreme lengths to make sure you have an awesome lesson. However, surf instruction is not a full time occupation, meaning they have committed their time, gas, parking fees and often even turned down other work or students to make your lesson happen. So, before you book, make sure your schedule is free and you have plenty of time to make it to the beach and find parking.

7. Safety in and out of the water
Even the best surfer on the calmest day could hurt him/herself, as surfing is an action sport. So, part of your instruction is how to surf safely and responsibly for you and others around you. during the lesson you will be taught basics of water safety and board management. There are 6 unbreakable rules to your lesson. The one that goes without saying is: Listen to the instructors at all times. The other rules are:

Always watch the waves. Never take your eyes off the ocean!
Always point your board the way you are going. Never pointed sideways to incoming waves!
Always control your board with two hands. Never let our board loose in the wave zone!
Always cover your face when you fall. Never put your face near the fins of the board!
Always get off the board long before the shore. Never ride the board all the way to the shallows!

Everyone will get rides on the surfboard during your lesson and it is exciting! Student sometimes forget to follow the safety rules. This is the most common time accidents happen. For example, if you ride all the way to the shallow area of the beach, your board will stop before you do and you may be thrown forward straight onto the sand. This can result in serious injury. So, simply listen, ask questions and understand these rules before you get into the water.  If you instructor has to remind of any of these rules, he/she will stop the lesson and ask you to leave the water for a moment in order to reflect upon the importance of said rule. If it happens a second time, the lesson will be cut short, nil refund.

8. Any photos or video taken during the lesson may be used by One Wave Surf for promotional purposes

9. Surf Lessons could change your life
Many people have left “normal” life to join the surfing life. This could happen to you. Seriously. At the very least you will have a great workout and have a radical experience. If you have any questions or hesitations about your surf lesson feel free to discuss them openly before agreeing to the lesson and of course before we get in the water 🙂

If you have already tried surfing, or it is the first time you are going to surf, you will know, or you should know, that it is a sport that requires a minimum of physical condition. There are many skills involved in this sport: endurance, power, speed, agility, coordination … so the better we are in these aspects, the better chances to improve your surfing or learn surfing.
Thanks for this blog . i really like it 🔷
